Trinity Presbyterian Church seeks to serve the communities in which its members live and work. In an effort to build a unified community with Christ at its center, Trinity has realized a need for a summer camp in areas of Norfolk. Therefore, during the week after school lets out in June each year, Trinity Presbyterian, in partnership with Young Terrace Recreational Center, will present The Camp for Kindergartners through 6th Graders and The Camp, Jr. for 3 to 5 year olds.
Trinity believes that caring for and building godly relationships with Norfolk's youth will play a critical role in the growth and development of these children into healthy and well-adjusted teenagers. While during the school year the public school system does an excellent job at providing the resources and instruction to promote the growth of Norfolk’s children, during the summer months, it is much more difficult for students to find these opportunities.
Trinity Presbyterian Church has realized this need in the City of Norfolk. Particularly in the predominately low-income neighborhoods that surround Young Terrace Recreational Center, Norfolk’s youth are confronted with circumstances that limit their healthy growth and maturation. Therefore Trinity Presbyterian will eliminate any social and economic barriers by collaborating with Young Terrace Recreational Center to present The Camp, which will build character by teaching excellence in sports and arts while simultaneously introducing the campers to Christ.
Over the course of the week, approximately 120 elementary school children will participate in a multi-faceted summer camp, which will teach excellence in sports and arts while simultaneously building character and introducing the campers to Christ. The instructors and camp counselors will be a combination of Young Terrace employees as well as Trinity Presbyterian Church members. The combination of these two groups will create a dynamic that will reach those children who might not otherwise be reached.
Throughout the day, the campers will participate in five activities that are divided between sports and arts. The campers will learn to play sports such as tennis, volleyball, soccer and baseball. The belief is that through structured interaction, the students will develop a passion for an activity as well as develop relationships with students with whom they might not otherwise engage. The arts section of the summer camp will provide all the supplies for the campers to dance, paint, sculpt, and sing.
